Orthodontic treatment works best when everything stays on track — but sometimes, unexpected issues pop up. Whether it’s a broken bracket, a loose wire, or sudden discomfort, knowing how to handle an orthodontic emergency can make all the difference. At Harnick Orthodontics in Albuquerque, we’re here to help you stay calm, stay informed, and stay on course with your treatment.

What Counts as an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every minor issue requires an urgent trip to the orthodontist, but some situations should be addressed sooner rather than later. Common orthodontic emergencies include:

  • A broken or loose bracket
  • A wire that has slipped out and is poking the cheek or gum
  • A loose band or spacer
  • Severe irritation or sores from appliances
  • Significant discomfort after an adjustment that doesn’t subside
  • A lost or broken aligner tray (if undergoing clear aligner treatment)

Mild soreness or occasional wire irritation is expected — but if something feels off or is causing persistent discomfort, it’s worth reaching out.

What to Do at Home (Until Your Appointment)

Some orthodontic problems can be temporarily managed at home until you can come into our Albuquerque office. Here’s what you can do:

  • Poking wire? Try gently pushing it back with a cotton swab or eraser. Orthodontic wax (which we provide) can also cushion the area.
  • Loose bracket? If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax. Don’t try to remove it.
  • Wire out of place? If it’s completely out and causing pain, you can clip it carefully with sanitized nail clippers — but only if it’s safe and you can’t come in right away.
  • Lost aligner? Call us promptly. We’ll help determine if you should move to the next tray or wear the previous one temporarily.

When to Call Harnick Orthodontics

If your appliance breaks, causes pain, or you’re unsure whether something is normal — call us. Dr. Kari Harnick Graeber or Dr. David Harnick can assess the issue and let you know whether you need an emergency visit or if it can wait.

Even if something seems minor, don’t hesitate to check in. Catching small problems early can help avoid delays in your overall treatment plan.

Preventing Emergencies: What You Can Do

Some emergencies are unavoidable, but many can be prevented with good habits:

  • Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods that can break brackets and wires.
  • Don’t chew on pens, ice, or fingernails.
  • Always wear a mouthguard during sports or physical activities.
  • Follow all instructions for aligner wear, turning expanders, or elastic use.

The better your compliance, the smoother your treatment.

"Dear Patients,

I am writing to share an important update about our practice. After much thought and consideration, I have made the very difficult decision to consolidate our two locations into one main office at Montgomery Pkwy. This was not a decision I made lightly, as I know how important convenience and continuity are for our patients and families.

Please know that my patients remain my top priority, and I want to ensure that no one feels left without support during this transition. To help with this, I worked out an arrangement with the new owner of the Golf Course Rd. office that will allow me to continue seeing patients there for a period of time after the transition.

Appointments at the Golf Course office will be limited.

Preference will be given to patients who began treatment at the Golf Course location.

Over time, most patients will transition fully to our Montgomery Pkwy office.

This arrangement was made with you in mind—to provide continuity of care and make the transition as smooth as possible.

I want to thank you for trusting us with your orthodontic care. I am committed to seeing you through your treatment and look forward to continuing your journey at our Montgomery Pkwy location.

If you have any questions about scheduling or the transition, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office.

With gratitude,
Kari Harnick Graeber DDS, MS
