Your TMJ is the hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. Jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and a bite that feels off can be signs that your temporomandibular joint is under strain. In many cases, TMJ symptoms have more than one cause, but when bite alignment is part of the problem, orthodontic treatment may help your jaw function more comfortably.
Harnick Orthodontics offers high-quality orthodontic care that can treat a variety of orthodontic issues, including overbites, underbites, and crossbites, and we would be glad to assess your situation and design a custom treatment plan just for you.
TMJ symptoms can range from occasional discomfort to daily frustration. If any of these sound familiar, an orthodontic evaluation can help determine whether bite alignment may be contributing to them.
When teeth do not fit together evenly, your jaw and facial muscles may compensate to find a comfortable closing position. Over time, that extra strain can contribute to soreness, clenching, grinding, headaches, and joint irritation for some patients.
Orthodontics is not the right solution for every TMJ case, but when the bite is a contributing factor, improving alignment can reduce strain and support healthier jaw function. You may be a good candidate for an orthodontic TMJ evaluation if:
Invisalign can help correct certain misaligned bites, which may reduce strain on the jaw and improve TMJ-related symptoms. By gradually repositioning the teeth into better alignment, Invisalign may ease pressure on the joints and surrounding muscles. However, not all TMJ cases are caused by bite issues, so a thorough evaluation is needed to determine the best treatment approach.
A TMJ appointment typically includes a detailed evaluation of your bite, jaw movement, and joint function. We may take digital X-rays or scans to assess alignment and look for signs of joint stress. During the visit, we can discuss your symptoms, lifestyle factors, and treatment options to create a personalized plan focused on relieving discomfort and improving function.
To help relieve TMJ symptoms at home, we often recommend applying warm compresses, practicing gentle jaw stretches, and avoiding hard or chewy foods. Managing stress and limiting habits like teeth clenching or gum chewing can also reduce strain on the jaw. If symptoms persist, we encourage scheduling an evaluation for professional guidance.
If jaw discomfort, clicking, or headaches are affecting your day, do not guess at the cause. Schedule a complimentary consultation to find out whether bite alignment may be contributing and what options make sense for you.
"Dear Patients,
I am writing to share an important update about our practice. After much thought and consideration, I have made the very difficult decision to consolidate our two locations into one main office at Montgomery Pkwy. This was not a decision I made lightly, as I know how important convenience and continuity are for our patients and families.
Please know that my patients remain my top priority, and I want to ensure that no one feels left without support during this transition. To help with this, I worked out an arrangement with the new owner of the Golf Course Rd. office that will allow me to continue seeing patients there for a period of time after the transition.
Appointments at the Golf Course office will be limited.
Preference will be given to patients who began treatment at the Golf Course location.
Over time, most patients will transition fully to our Montgomery Pkwy office.
This arrangement was made with you in mind—to provide continuity of care and make the transition as smooth as possible.
I want to thank you for trusting us with your orthodontic care. I am committed to seeing you through your treatment and look forward to continuing your journey at our Montgomery Pkwy location.
If you have any questions about scheduling or the transition, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office.
With gratitude,
Kari Harnick Graeber DDS, MS
